Note: For those of you born after 1980, an album was an archaic piece of vinyl that played music when spun in a circle with a needle attached to it…really.

Classic barroom argument: What’s the coolest album cover ever?

I’ll answer that now to save you the trouble.

Whipped Cream and Other Delights Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass 1966

Trivia Note: Delores Erickson, the model on the album  was three months pregnant at the shoot.

O.k., I’m probably not getting the appeal because of my gender, right? I’d have to search back in my memory to come up with one I really liked. For the most part I guess I didn’t pay all that much attention to album covers (*gasp*), I was more interested in the vinyl. I can tell you I was traumatized by the Eagles Greatest Hits album cover. I don’t even know why; it just scared the beejeezus out of me. To this day, it’s vividly engrained in my memory.

  2. Mark Terry says:

I liked Candy-O by The Cars and PLaying Possum by Carly Simon.

Well, Tom, you’ve happened to have named my all-time favorite album cover with Whipped Cream and Other Delights. It’s a great one! And thanks for including the model’s name (she deserves the shout-out… especially from all the pre-teen boys my age that stared at this endlessly). I think I once had this argument with a friend named Don. He argued that The Ohio Players entire line of album covers were it for him. Fun post.

  4. Just a Girl says:

Perhaps I am to young to to take part in this dicussion but when I think album cover I think Beatles “Albany Road” as the most recognized image…anyone sees it they know what it is. People make a pilgramages to that local – its like….iconic…

but of course I am a cassette person (my first cassette was the sound track to top gun).

    • tjs9261 says:

that Top Gun admission had to be a little painful…

      • Just a Girl says:

Hey – there are ALL kinds of good songs on the Top Gun sound track…

Of course I may have been listening to the King and I’s “whistle a happy tune” on the ride in to work today…and this will kill yeah T – it played right before the KINGS “dont be cruel”…and following the King was “I am women” and then “Take this Job and shove it”…tee hee – i know …someone needs to send the paramedics to your house right now.

  5. Christine says:

Can’t debate your choice, Tom. I tended to spend my money on soundtracks and greatest hits albums as I knew I already liked most of the songs. The only album cover that came to mind was the Bee Gees’ MAIN COURSE album. That came out when I was in 5th grade and I remember being a little shocked that my parents would leave that album out where my friends could see it. HA! I remember them having Herb Alpert’s Tiajuana Brass on their big ass reel-to-reel tapes, but I don’t remember the albums.

  6. Pasquale Palumbo says:

That album cover was famously parodied by Pat Cooper on his comedy album “Spaghetti Sauce and Other Delights.”

I’s like to remind you and just a girl that unless I’m mistaken, the Beatles never released an album called “Albany Road.” I believe it was called “Abbey Road.”

Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon-Iconic
    Blind Faith-controversial

  7. BillD says:

There’s always Soul Asylum’s ‘Clam Dip & Other Delights’ for having one of those images you want to remove from your cerebral cortex with a dull melon baller.

    • BillD says:

True confessions; if I had A-Rod money, oh you better buh-LIEVE I’d track down whoever has the original oil painting of KISS ‘Love Gun’ and hand over a blank check.

What can I say? ’77 was a big year for me. So shoot me.

Trivia tidbit: no one in KISS was pregnant at the time but the artist, Ken Kelly, was a student of Frank Frazetta (of Molly Hatchet album cover ummm…fame).
